Regardless of where children live and go to school, their ability to learn and progress academically is influenced by a range of factors, including their family structure, their parents’ educational level, where they reside, their health, gender, motivation to learn, and so on. They may be influenced by academic characteristics such as reading ability.
Only 18% of Ugandan girls and 20% of Ugandan males attend secondary school, making this group of students (ages 13-17) particularly exposed to a variety of social and economic difficulties. Students’ learning and academic progress are hindered by classrooms with few scholastic resources and teachers with limited access to additional reading materials, which further hinders the long-term development of a reading culture.
