In many developing nations, including Uganda, children and youth with disabilities face profound challenges as they are often marginalized and excluded from essential opportunities. At TOUCEO, we are committed to breaking down these barriers and empowering these children to lead fulfilling lives. Our mission is to promote inclusivity, provide essential support, and create a brighter future for every child, regardless of their abilities, in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Understanding the Impact of Marginalization in Uganda:
Research-based evidence from reputable organizations highlights the critical situation of children with disabilities in Uganda. According to a report by UNICEF, negative attitudes and false beliefs remain pervasive barriers affecting children with disabilities in all cultures, including Uganda. These negative attitudes hinder their access to education, healthcare, and social participation, limiting their overall development and potential.
Gender inequality further exacerbates the challenges faced by children and youth with disabilities in Uganda. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reports that female children with impairments are more likely to face discrimination, limited access to education, and exclusion from essential societal activities.
Moreover, poverty remains a significant factor perpetuating the marginalization of children with disabilities in Uganda. The World Bank’s research shows that families lacking access to basic resources often have members with disabilities and are frequently the most marginalized and impoverished. These families face difficulties in providing proper care and support for their children with disabilities, entrenching a cycle of exclusion and vulnerability.
UN Development Goals and Our Commitment to Change:
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) call for inclusive and equitable quality education (Goal 4), the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls (Goal 5), and the eradication of poverty (Goal 1). TOUCEO aligns closely with these goals as we strive to challenge negative beliefs and advocate for the rights of children with disabilities in Uganda.
Our Approach in Uganda:
TOUCEO’s team on the ground in Uganda has witnessed the profound impact of marginalization on children with physical, mental, and learning disabilities. To address these challenges, we have developed a comprehensive approach that involves sensitizing communities about the importance of inclusion and providing necessary resources, skills, and support for children with disabilities.
Through our sponsorship program, we empower families by providing for their basic needs, breaking the barriers of poverty, and enabling them to care for their children with disabilities. Subsequently, we work towards sending these children to specialized schools where they can access education, healthcare, and other essential services, fostering their holistic development.
